Flowering Fern "Zenmai"


Flowerring Fern "Zenmai" sprout from April to June and those leaf buds are coverd fleece cotton. Zenmai is distributed in the Korean Peninsula, China, Taiwan and the Himalayas. The same kind of Zenmai is distributed worldwide except Australasia. There are Yamadori Zenmai / Cinnamon Fern (Osmunda cinnamomea), Yasha Zenmai (O. lancea Thunb.), Oni Zenmai (O. claytoniana), Royal Fern (O. regalis) and so on besides this Zenmai (O. japonica Thunb.). Tenkara fly is often used the fleece cotton of zenmai to make a fly body. People spun the fleece cotton of Zenmai into thread and made clothes for cold weathers in the old days. This material has performance of water proof. And this leaf buds are edible as a preserved food that is dry in Japan.
